The roots hang freely in the water and are put on display. Houseplants such as Philodendron, Anthurium or ivy are ideal. The best way to grow these hydro plants yourself is to let a cutting root in water. Herbs such as basil, rosemary or sage are also hydro-compatible; they can be planted as established plants by removing the soil from the roots.
