Substrate for Alocasia designed to maintain even moisture, while avoiding a dense, waterlogged environment around the roots.
The mix combines an organic moisture-retaining component and pieces of coconut husk with a high proportion of coarse perlite and tree fern fiber. This keeps the substrate airy and ensures the roots receive plenty of oxygen.
It is suitable for Alocasias grown in pots with good drainage, plants with an actively developing root system that need both moisture and plenty of oxygen, as well as interiors where very coarse substrates dry out too quickly.
It is also an excellent choice for growers who want to switch from dense traditional substrates to a more airy mix.
For semi-hydro growing with a water reservoir, we recommend using the fine-grade mineral substrate instead of this mix.
The substrate is supplied in a practical 8.5 L pack.
Use with a pot that has good drainage.
Loosely fill the substrate around the roots and gently tap the pot to help the mix settle. Do not compact the substrate.
After repotting, water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Check moisture below the surface of the substrate as well. Do not repeatedly allow the entire root ball to dry out completely, but also avoid constant waterlogging.
The mix does not contain added fertilizer. Adjust fertilizing according to the plant’s growth stage, the season, and the amount of light.
